The Naked Pea

The naked pea (Lathyrus aphaca) is an annual vine belonging to the Fabaceae family (Leguminosae or Fabaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants and is considered very rare and very much reduced. The plant is native to Eurasia. In the Netherlands, the plant in southern Limburg.


The plant is 20-60 cm high and rising or climbing stems. The middle and upper leaves consist of scrolls with 0.5 to 4 cm long, leaf-like stipules.


The naked pea blooms from May to July, 6-18 mm long, with yellow flowers on the inside of the flag a brand of honey brown red lines.


The fruit is 2-3 cm long and 4-6 mm wide, slightly curved pods. The poisonous, 3-4 mm long, brown to black, gray frosted seeds are flat-ovoid.


The plant is found between the grain on damp, calcareous soil and sometimes verges.
