The Pale Yellow Tetrahit

The pale yellow tetrahit (Galeopsis segetum) is an annual plant that belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and very much reduced. The plant is native to Central and Southern Europe.

The plant is 7-30 cm tall and has oval to lanceolate leaves. The upper leaves are velvety hairy below. The stem is below the nodes or not very thickened and soft hairs.

The pale yellow flowers from June tetrahit to autumn yellow white, 2.5 to 3.5 inch long flowers. The upper lip of the corolla is cut-toothed. The flowers sit with ten to thirty pieces in apparent whorls.

The fruit is a four-part split fruit.

The plant is open, dry, nutrient-poor land along hedgerows, railways and along roadsides.
