The Needle Chervil

Needle Chervil (Scandix pecten-veneris) is an annual plant, which belongs to the floral display family (Apiaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and very much reduced. The name of the plant due to the upright, needle-shaped fruits. The plant is native to Eurasia.

The plant is 15-25 cm high. The branched, knit stem is standing off hairy spread. The leaves are two to four suspension.

Needle Chervil flowers in May and June with white flowers in compound screens are one to three rays. There are usually five carpels and no omwindselbladen.

The fruit is 3-7 cm long, gesnavelde, two-piece split fruit with one seed per fruit section. The short-haired spiny beak is flattened and two to six times longer than the seed-bearing part of the fruit.

The plant occurs on arable land in damp, calcareous soil.
