The Water Rushes

The water rushes armbloemige (Eleocharis quinqueflora) is a polvormende, perennial plant which belongs to the cypergrassenfamilie (Cyperaceae). It is a plant of low pasture within grasslands, valleys, dunes, salt marshes and salt marshes on wet, calcareous soil with fresh to brackish water. Also, the plant for at seepage locations. The plant is indigenous to the northern hemisphere of North America to western Asia and Chile. She is on the Dutch Red List of rare plants and fallen sharply.


The plant is 5-25 cm high and is a hardy, long, thin, strong branching rhizome. The terminal bud of the rhizome is thickened into a ball. The stems are often slightly bent and leafless. The ground leaves are rounded and grooved.


Water rushes armbloemige the blooms from May to July. The dark green, 0.5 mm thick Peduncle terete or slightly flattened. In the bottom half of the stem is a reddish brown leaf sheath. Inflorescence a spike with three to seven flowers. The specific name comes from the Latin for quinqueflora "five flowers". The spike is 4-8 mm long and 4 mm wide. The lower stem kelkkafje is comprehensive and almost as long as the spikelet. The dark brown, oval, pointed kafjes have a broad membranous leaf margin. Per flower for four to six spines are transformed to petals. The style has three stamps.


The fruit is 1.5-2 mm long, tan, three-sided nut with a thorny point.
